What 3 Important Skills are Listed Under Welder – All You Need To Know

welder-skills

Welders are able to join metals together by using machines that put out extreme heat. They are able to smooth metals and also inspect structures that may need to be welded. If you are looking to become a welder, there are some important skills you’ll need to become successful at it.

What are the 3 important skills listed under welder? The three most important welder skills are:

  • Physical abilities
  • Math skills
  • Attention to detail

Because of the important job welders have, it is crucial that they are highly skilled in certain areas. If you are interested in welding, here are some things you should know and prepare yourself for.

3 Important Skills Listed Under Welder

If you want to become a welder, there are three important skills you need to possess in order to be successful at it. In welding, you will be required to study blueprints in order to calculate dimensions, so these three skills are very important. We’ll look at them here in more detail.

Physical abilities  Ability to stand for a long period of timeHand-eye coordinationAbility to hold a welding torch for a long period of time
Math skillsA strong command of math is needed to calculate dimensions and decipher blueprints
Attention to detailWelding needs to be precise, and a welder must recognize areas that are damaged or weak in order to ensure a safe environment.

1.      Physical Abilities

Your physical abilities are an important aspect of welding. You need to be in good physical shape in order to withstand the lengthy periods of time you may have to stand. There is also a lot of bending, twisting, and lifting involved.

An important physical ability would be to have a good grip so that you can strongly hold onto a welding torch for a long period of time. Having a steady hand allows you to weld metals together with precision.

Several important physical abilities are:

  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Depth-perception
  • Endurance
  • Heavy lifting
  • Close vision
  • Attention to details

2.      Math Skills

Math skills are an important skill to have because you will need them in order to depict sketches, understand blueprints, and estimate dimensions. Math skills are needed when making cuts and trimming down metal.

Having a solid grasp of math is useful for:

  • Understanding 3D and 2D diagrams
  • Interpreting sketches
  • Spatial reasoning

3.      Attention to Detail

Being able to pay attention to detail is an important skill for welders to possess. Because welders work on things like bridges, ships, and planes, it is crucial for them to be precise in their work. They are required to clean any grease off the metal pieces and get rid of any cracks, bubbles, or holes.

Along with that, welders typically work in dangerous environments, where if they are not paying close attention, they could become injured. A part of paying attention to detail is making sure that your workspace is always clean. This is so you can notice any potentially dangerous materials.

When you are able to pay attention to details you are able to:

  • Maintain clean workspaces
  • Stick to safety guidelines
  • Identify joints
  • Inspect materials
  • Cut with precision
  • Trim metal
  • Notice changes in metal flows

Other Skills

Along with the three important skills listed above, there are other skills that are important for a welder to have. Having all these skills will set you apart from other beginner welders and will help your resume stand out to your potential employers.

  • Safety awareness – Welders need to understand safety in order to keep themselves safe and the people around them.
  • Problem-solving – Welders need to be able to notice flaws in the work and be able to fix them. They should also know how to repair any equipment.
  • Read blueprints – Welders should be able to easily read blueprints and understand how they are associated with the project.
  • Eyesight – Welders need to be able to see precise details in their work and also be able to find any flaws.
  • Understanding of different welding techniques – Because different projects and metals require different types of welding, it is important for a welder to be knowledgeable in the different forms.
  • Understanding metals – Just like needing to know the different welding techniques, there are different types of metals used in welding, and they should be able to differentiate them and understand how they work.
  • Concentration – A good welder has the ability to be totally immersed in their project. Having great concentration allows them to be precise and keep their workspace safe.

What Does a Welder Do?

There is a universal need for a welder’s skills because they work on a variety of industrial, manufacturing, and construction structures. Some welders have to do work underwater to repair bridges and other foundations. They work on anything metal, like planes, ships, bridges, and buildings. So, it’s important they know their craft well.

Welders can earn a degree in the field, or they can achieve a welding certification. However, you don’t need either of those to become a welder, but it does look better on your resume if you were certified, and it also opens you up for more possibilities.

Depending on the skill of the welder and their chosen industry, their job duties can vary. There are two types of skill a welder can fall under:

  1. Unskilled – Unskilled welders do not require any type of training or skills. There is a need for limited knowledge about metals. Unskilled welders sometimes run robots in order to join together panels of vehicles. They can also spot weld metals during construction and make repairs. Oftentimes, they assist skilled welders.
  2. Skilled – These welders have gone through training and apprenticeships. They are knowledgeable in welding specifications, and different metals are able to perform advanced welding techniques.

Welders are exposed to extreme heat, so they need to take special precautions by wearing aprons, protective head gear, and gloves to prevent sparks from burning and injuring them.

Along with taking precautions for their safety, they have to also take precautions for the metals they are welding. They need to prevent the metals from overheating, so it doesn’t cause warping. shrinking or expanding.

Different Types of Welding

Depending on the welder’s project, there are more than 100 methods of welding that might be used. The most common method is arc welding, which is a form of fusion welding. It is done by using an arc of electric current to weld together two pieces of metal using a special metal rod. Other popular forms of welding are:

  • Oxy-fuel welding – Also known as gas welding, uses a combination of oxygen and gasses in order to produce heat that is able to melt and join pieced of metal together.
  • Resistance welding – This is a cost-effective form of welding that uses pressure and current to join together metal.
  • Shielded metalarc welding – This form of weld uses heat with an arc between a covered metal electrode and the metal.

When a welder looks at blueprints for a job, they take their knowledge of metals and different welding techniques to figure out the best method for the job. They’ll then cut and position the metal to begin spot welding.

Conclusion

Welders use equipment that puts out extreme heat in order to fuse together pieces of metals. They do this for buildings, bridges, vehicles, ships, and more. Their precision is important to keep them safe and make sure what they are welding is strong and free of flaws. The three main skills a welder should hold are – physical abilities, math skills, and attention to detail. These are the skills that will make you a successful welder.
